new T61 lenovo, want to install xp with Dell resource CD's (from inspiron 5150), is this possible?
My t61 order is coming (yay!) with Vista Basic (Boo!). the Dell I own (from 2004) comes with all of the resource CD's (which has an orig copy of home XP, dell diagnostic tools, sonic burn software etc). the hard drive in it is PATA.
I want:
-Home xp w/ sp2 (sp2 from downloading upgrades)
-thinkvantage/Lenovo's important software
Don't want:
-extra bull s@#t that on the dell CD.
-Vista (no dual boot)
Possible?
Also, how do I acess the the BIOS (i've herad I have to switch something)?
Can Nlite help?
can I get vista back eventually?
Oh one more thing, those who want vista cause it looks pretty, get:
-TopDesk - does the cool 3D flip!
-Joostre - Sidebar gadgets
-Windows blinds 6.0 - Graphical User Interface (even prettier)
then you can enjoy few (if any) glitches, play with stolen software, GET 15% BETTER Performance, use less resources/memory, and last longer on a battery (low resources) and have extra money in ur pockets! Only thing you miss out on is Dirtectx 10
I doubt you can use the resource CD and successfully activate XP it as its an specific Dell OEM version, if it does you still have to update and the new genuine advantage tool might not allow it.
Assuming you get past all that and have a working xp disk.
You will want to do a fresh xp install and delete the current windows directory in the setup section. You need to boot from the cd and delete the partition when you get that prompt. This would overwrite Vista and avoid the dual boot.
You should be able to get the Lenovo software from their website. You should be able to uninstall any software you dont want through add/remove programs.
Bios, according to the website you have to - Press the blue ThinkVantage button when the message "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button " is displayed to enter the ThinkVantage Productivity Center, then select Start setup utility to open the BIOS Setup Utility." -
Most systems just use a function key or the delete button during startup. This happens soon as you turn the computer on and may miss it.
If you delete Vista and dont want dual boot option then its gone, only way back to it is another restore cd or clean install.
What you are trying to do, except for the resource cd part, is do able, but you might want to research it further before wiping out your new working machine.
